This project focuses on Incels (i.e., abbreviated term for Involuntary Celibates), a population that includes 2 various communities of individuals, mostly men self-identifying as heterosexual, involved in online discussion forums and other social media . Their discourses mostly address experienced challenges or the perceived impossibility in establishing sexual relationships with women. Specifically, this project aims to (1) explore the characteristics of the individuals self-identifying as Incels; (2) examine the distress, hatred, and violence in their discourses, oriented either toward themselves (e.g., suicidality) or others (e.g., most notably, women); (3) test for the existence of Incels sub-groups by developing both a preliminary typology and a linguistic analysis of the distinctive profiles that emerge from the corpus (e.g., suicide- and hatred- related content, misogynistic statements, distress, relational and sexual representations).
